Fungi fascinate me, their strange beauty and habit of announcing themselves to the world unheralded, together with their variety and the folklore associated with them all contribute to a fascination that renews itself every year as Autumn, peak season for this vast group of Organisms arrives. 2021 was no exception and I made several excursions in search of new discoveries. The image displayed below was howeverfound in a rather unlikely and at first sight, un-prepossessing place. This was in an area of disturbed ground between a well-used footpath and a car park for a nearby indoor market. Those who understand Fungi however and their way of growth will not be surprised however as this is fertile ground for them. They are adapted to take advantage of conditions which combine a large amount of organic matter with access to moisture and sufficient space in which to grow. In a relatively small area, there were several interesting species and in nearby locations quite a few more. some of those are shown below to give context for the range and variety of Fungi on that day, but this image turned out to be the one that has been selected for inclusion in the 2023 Cornwall Wildlife Trust Calendar. That represents a huge accolade in that this calendar is probably the most prestigious in Cornwall, made up as it is from images submitted by members of the CWT Photographic Group. This is a group of highly talented photographers, some of whom are professionals, so I am honoured to be amongst them once again.
